heiAIMS PreCourse & Summer School 2024
The Heidelberg – Cape Town Network for Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing (heiAIMS) is organizing a Summer School on the topic of linear, integer and nonlinear optimization in March 2024. A preparatory course on the fundamentals of optimization will be held one week in advance of the school. We strongly encourage interested master students to apply for both events in order to learn more about this scientific research field.
PreCourse Summer School 2024
Fundamentals of Optimization
March 4-8, 2024 • African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS)
The course reviews fundamental concepts of linear algebra and calculus indispensible for optimization, including multi-variate calculus, Newton's method, linear systems of equations, and cones. Lectures will be accompanied by practical exercises.
Target Audience:
- Master students from the relevant fields
Program:
- Monday - Friday: 11:00 - 13:00 Lecture Fundamentals of Optimization / 14:30 - 15:30 Tutor hours
- Tuesday - Friday: 09:00 - 10:00 Tutor hours
- Exercises on Wednesday will be computer based.

Summer School 2024
Linear, Integer and Nonlinear Optimization
March 11-15, 2024 • African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), Cape Town, South Africa
We provide an introduction to linear optimization, integer optimization, and nonlinear constrained optimization. For each topic, the course covers the theoretical background as well as numerical algorithms. Lectures will be accompanied by practical exercises.
Target Audience:
- Master students from the relevant fields
Programm:
- Monday - Friday: 2 lectures (60 minutes each) in the morning, 2 exercises (60 minutes each) in the afternoon.
- Final group projects will be assigned on Thursday for students to work on until Friday noon. Grades will be based on presentations on Friday afternoon.
