The IWR is an interdisciplinary research center for Scientific Computing which builds bridges across disciplines. It promotes mathematical and computational methods in science, engineering and the humanitites. Currently the IWR comprises more than 50 research teams from various faculties. Around 600 scientists work together in interdisciplinary cooperation projects. In addition to educating the next generation of excellent scientists the IWR also focuses on advacing international research networks.

Ruth Großeholz receives prize for the best HGS-MathComp fellow talk 2016
The HGS’ Annual Colloquium in Speyer in December 2016 gathered about 80 fellows, supervisors and invited guests, discussing their most recent research results including the most captivating works by Großeholz and Farnoud
On the first and second of December about 80 fellows of the HGS-MathComp as well as invited guests and supervisors came together for the traditional Annual Colloquium in Speyer. For two days they enjoyed vivid scientific discourse and a fun evening program including a trip to the famous local Christmas market.
The prize for the best fellow talk was awarded to Ruth Großeholz for her exciting insight into her research about a brassinosteroid-regulated pathway in the membrane of Arabidopsis thaliana. The first prize for the best poster presentation was given to Ali Farnoud for his work on flow and particle pattern analysis in a human nasal cavity model.
The organizing team would like to thank all participants for their lively inputs in form of talks, presentations and discussions. Special thanks goes out to the invited speakers Dr. Kathrin Hatz (Bayer AG), Dr. Michael Geiger (d-fine GmbH), Dr. Michael Schick (Robert-Bosch GmbH) and Dr. Daniel Gerecht (SAP SE). In four interesting talks they introduced their companies and their very own working life.

Heidelberg Robotics Day – Captivating insights into the world of robots
Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computation invites the generations to a diversified program in the field of robotics.
On November 9, 2016, the Mathematikon opened its doors to all generations of the public, granting insight into the work of Prof. Katja Mombaurs research group – Optimization in Robotics and Biomechanics. The program ranged from presentations, talks and interactive items on the agenda, including a drawing competition for the kindergarten children, to lectures and discussions by distinguished experts. In this context, presenting Mombaur’s HeiCub, the result of a pioneering project developing the humanoid robot, it was our honour to host renowned researchers in the fields of robotics like Prof. Oussama Khatib (Stanford University, USA), Prof. Bruno Siciliano (University of Naples, Italy) and Dr. Thorsten Kröger (Google). We are already looking forward to advancing the research in this field and to consolidating our contacts and cooperations.

Dr Frederik Graw receives Hengstberger – Award 2016
Bio-Quant researcher and IWR member hosting symposium on “Systems Immunology and Vaccine design: How to optimally train our immuno-logical memory” in October 2017
On October 29, Dr. Frederik Graw was one of the three up-and-coming scientists receiving the annual Hengstberger-Award, advancing pioneering researchers from all disciplines. The Hengstberger-Award finances Dr. Graw’s scientific symposium on “Systems Immunology and Vaccine design: How to optimally train our immuno-logical memory” at the International Academic Forum Heidelberg on October 9-10, 2017. Within the framework of this symposium, Dr. Graw will focus on new approaches developing vaccine, based on the immune system’s capability to memorise former infections and to stimulate the development of persistent memory cells. As a IWR member, Graw will gather immunologists, virologists and parasitologists with experts from systems biology and mathematical modelling. It’s our delight and honour to make our contribution in this significant discipline.

Prof. Mombaur teaching humanoid robots to walk
On account of Prof. Mombaur’s pioneering works in the field of optimization in robotics and biomechanics and her international KoRoiBot-Project, innovative mathematical methods and algorithms are paving the way for humanoid robots to walk upright.
Affiliating seven institutions from Germany, France, Israel, Italy and the Netherlands, Prof. Katja Mombaur gathered and lead an international team of experts from various disciplines to advance the autonomous movement of humanoid robots. The project has met and tackled challenges concerning the analysis of human motion sequences, both from a mathematical and biomechanical approach, developing a data base, compiling data for various environments from stairs to slippery ground and many more.
The highly auspicious results were eventually presented last September in the conclusive KoRoiBot workshop of the European research project. I-Robot now is one step closer.

Akademische Mittagspause: „Sprechen Sie Mathematik?“
Mathematiker der Universität Heidelberg und des Heidelberger Instituts für Theoretische Studien laden zu Kurzvorträgen in die Peterskirche ein
Unter der Überschrift „Sprechen Sie Mathematik?“ lädt die Universität Heidelberg im Sommersemester 2016 zur „Akademischen Mittagspause“ ein. Vom 25. April bis 21. Juli stellen Wissenschaftler in 61 Kurzvorträgen ihre Forschungsarbeiten aus unterschiedlichen mathematischen Gebieten vor. Veranstalter sind das Interdisziplinäre Zentrum für Wissenschaftliches Rechnen und das MAThematics Center Heidelberg der Universität Heidelberg gemeinsam mit dem Heidelberger Institut für Theoretische Studien. Das Spektrum der Themen reicht von gebrochenen Symmetrien über die Rolle des Zufalls bei der Ordnung des Erbmaterials bis zur Bekämpfung von Parasiten mithilfe der Mathematik. Die halbstündigen Veranstaltungen finden montags bis freitags (außer feiertags) von 13.00 bis 13.30 Uhr in der Heidelberger Peterskirche, Plöck 70, statt.
Die „Akademische Mittagspause“ ist eine Initiative der Universität Heidelberg mit dem Ziel, wissenschaftliche Inhalte greifbar und auch für ein fachfremdes Publikum verständlich zu machen. Die Reihe dieses Sommersemesters startet am Montag (25. April) mit einem Vortrag von Dr. Michael J. Winckler, der den Titel „Finanzmathematik: Wie funktioniert eigentlich Hedging?“ trägt. Am Dienstag (26. April) spricht Prof. Dr. Georg Bock darüber, „Wie Mathematik der New Yorker U-Bahn half, viel Geld zu sparen“. Mit der Frage, „Wie im Computer Sterne entstehen“, beschäftigt sich am Mittwoch (27. April) Prof. Dr. Ralf Klessen. Am Donnerstag (28. April) folgt ein Vortrag des Physikers Prof. Dr. Manfred Salmhofer zum Thema „Gebrochene Symmetrien machen die Welt bunt“. Die Eröffnungswoche endet am Freitag (29. April) mit einem Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Anna Wienhard über „Die Geometrie das Raumes: Vom Leben in verschiedenen Welten“.
Die Veranstaltungsreihe wird unterstützt von der Klaus Tschira Stiftung.

Praxis-Forum zum Thema „Open Data“
Vertreter aus Wissenschaft und Praxis diskutieren Chancen und Herausforderungen im Umgang mit offenen Daten
„…Zu einem Praxis-Forum „Open Data“ kommen Vertreter verschiedener Forschungseinrichtungen der Universität Heidelberg sowie Partner aus Wirtschaft und öffentlicher Verwaltung am 15. April 2016 an der Ruperto Carola zusammen. In Vorträgen und Diskussionsrunden werden sich die rund 70 Teilnehmer über Innovationen im Umgang mit offenen Daten austauschen sowie Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der verwendeten fachlichen Ansätze analysieren. Teil des Veranstaltungsprogramms ist auch eine sogenannte Open Tables Session, die praktische Einblicke in die Verwendung von Open Data ermöglicht. Veranstalter des Praxis-Forums sind die Heidelberger Graduiertenschule der mathematischen und computergestützten Methoden für die Wissenschaften (HGS MathComp) der Universität Heidelberg, die InnovationLab GmbH und die BASF SE Ludwigshafen mit Unterstützung der Industrie- und Handelskammer Rhein-Neckar sowie des Komitees für Mathematische Modellierung, Simulation und Optimierung (KoMSO)…“

Aus Anlass dieses Jubiläums wird das 61. Forum zum Thema „Erfolge, Defizite und Zukunftsthemen der Bildverarbeitung“ am 8. April 2016 als Festveranstaltung durchgeführt. Mathematiker und Mediziner wollen Diagnose und Therapie
der Sepsis verbessern
Klaus Tschira Stiftung fördert interdisziplinäres Forschungsprojekt mit drei Millionen Euro
„…Eine computergestützte Früherkennung der Sepsis sowie neue Therapie-Ansätze zur Bekämpfung der Blutvergiftung sind Ziel eines neuen Verbundprojekts, bei dem das Interdisziplinäre Zentrum für Wissenschaftliches Rechnen (IWR) der Universität Heidelberg und die Klinik für Anästhesiologie und Operative Intensivmedizin des Universitätsklinikums Mannheim zusammenarbeiten. Die Klaus Tschira Stiftung fördert das interdisziplinäre Forschungsvorhaben „Scientific Computing for the Improved Diagnosis and Therapy of Sepsis“ (SCIDATOS) über einen Zeitraum von drei Jahren mit insgesamt rund drei Millionen Euro…“
